Enjoy Teaching - Message from L. A. by Junko Nakamura

Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day has come and gone. Japanese people give chocolates on“Valentine’s Day” but giving chocolates is just one of the options here in America. On that day people send cards and give presents -- flowers, candies, or whatever -- and it is a day not only for women but for everybody to show their love to their loved ones.
(Wow, does this mean that I get double gifts because my birthday is on February 14?)

When my son was in kindergarten in Illinois, his teacher gave out a list of all his classmates so that the mothers could help their children sign their names on the Valentine cards to give away to their friends.
They also each made a candy carrier at school and on Valentines Day they filled them with valentines.

This year his fourth grade class had a Valentine’s Party and the children brought Valentine cards for every student. He has thirty-one classmates so he gave away 31 valentines!
I heard that upper-graders usually do not give out many valentines any more but since his class had a party he was happy to sign the valentines cards for all his classmates.
