Enjoy Teaching - Message from L. A. by Junko Nakamura

- Fund Raising -

Schools in California have been struggling from drastic budget cuts in recent years. In order to augment their budgets, each school PTA makes a strong effort to have successful fund raising events whenever possible. Kids sometimes bring home shopping catalogs from school to sell things to people they know. Catalogs for wrapping paper right before the holiday season are very popular, and there was even a catalog showing of many kinds of cookie dough that I tried to make during winter break. Also, each PTA holds a big party at a nice hotel with dinner, music and a silent auction to raise money for the school. Yes, there are many interesting ideas for making money for schools!

This week at my sonユs school, the students are going to run for their school. In this Fun Run/Walk, the students will participate in a moneymaking effort for their school by running themselves.

There are rules for the Fun Run/Walk. The students ask their parents, relatives or neighbors to be a sponsor. The sponsor agrees to pay money for each lap the children run. Each lap is about 1/5 mile and they have 30 minutes to run it. A student will be able to run 10 to 15 laps. After the run, the kids collect the money agreed from the sponsor. The students enjoy the run and also raising money for their school. Of course, this event benefits their school and all the money they collect is used for their school activities such as field trips.

A money making event does sound great to the kids since the money is used for the benefit of their own school. They are definitely proud of themselves to be able to help their school, and it surely helps them build their self-esteem.
