EFL

EFL stands for English as a Foreign Language. This is opposed to ESL which stands for English as a Second Language. ESL is taught to foreign students in an English speaking country. EFL is taught in countries like Japan where the English is not spoken as the main language.

Because our students are learning in an EFL environment in Japan, they are in contact with English for a total of about only ±40 hours a year. Since we see our students weekly, it may seem like we have a lot of time with them, but actually, this adds up to less than two days in a year! We teachers must give them lessons which they can learn and remember for the remaining 363 days!
