IIEEC-OUP Teacher Training Certificate Program

The IIEEC-Oxford University Press Teacher Training Certificate Program is aimed at all teachers of young learners who wish to become confident and effective teachers. Those participants who attend all workshops within two consecutive sessions and complete the final self-assessment component will receive a Certificate of Completion from the IIEEC Teacher Training Center and Oxford University Press.

Workshop content has been developed by Ritsuko Nakata in cooperation with Oxford University Press and is aimed at all teachers of young learners who wish to become more confident, effective teachers. The workshops are run by qualified teacher trainers from the IIEEC Teacher Training Center. In addition to the lectures, skills practice sessions will provide actual lessons in how to use flash cards and how to teach effectively with the Model Action Talk (MAT) METHOD. Those participants that attend all six Workshops and complete a final self-assessment component are eligible to receive a Certificate of Completion from Oxford University Press. They will also receive a certificate from the IIEEC Teacher Training Center.

The cost for each workshop is ¥5,000. (Included: one lecture video, one skills section video, a set of handouts in English and Japanese per workshop, tax)

Workshop 1
Fundamentals of Teaching: The MAT METHOD
This workshop introduces the Model Action Talk (MAT) METHOD as an effective system of teaching English to children.

Workshop 2
Activating the Right and the Left Sides of the Brain
This workshop examines the roles of the left and right side of the brain in relation to language acquisition in young learners. Various techniques are introduced that teachers can use to stimulate both sides of the brain getting the best performance from students.

Workshop 3
Know Yourself, Know Your Students
Understanding that there are many different types of learners will help teachers select the appropriate teaching technique to maximize teaching effectiveness. This workshop looks at different types of learners and how teachers can use the MAT METHOD to ensure ALL types of learners are cared for.

Workshop 4
Getting Maximum Results in Reading while Speaking
This workshop will examine how students learn to read, the importance of “sight words” or “key words” and how teachers with limited teaching time can effectively teach reading and speaking simultaneously.

Workshop 5
Classroom Management and Lesson Planning
This workshop looks at how teachers can effectively manage a good lesson; topics covered include how to discipline and give praise, the use of the mother tongue and the importance of lesson planning.

Workshop 6
Using Activities Effectively
This workshop will examine the use of activities with a learning purpose such as vocabulary reinforcement and checking pronunciation. The workshop will also look at correcting mistakes and effective ways of teaching songs and chants.
